The 1916 photo is of an intelligent and capable looking man. I can imagine he contributed to solving the problems of keeping the guns firing. I like how he is remembered by the family with a naming tradition.

Lovely remembrance. He had a very unusual name. Do you know the origin of his surname Greek?

Thank you Lisa. That is an interesting question but No, I don't know where the surname came from. I have traced the family back to Fanny's 3rd great grandfather Bernard Greek (abt. 1665-1746). All generations down from him to Fanny were living at Weare Giffard in Devon, England.

Wonderful, encompassing story of his life. Even the detail that he was buried beside the 3 men who were killed in the same barrage gave a visual of the final moments of his life.

Thank you Karla. My husband managed to go to the gravesite while on a work trip in Europe and was moved by the experience of seeing the four of them lined up there having spent their final moments together. My husband's middle name is Trevor and his father's first name was Trevor. Both of them were named after Trevor Greek Lane. The medals were passed down to my husband and have been worn at Anzac Day parades by my son in honour of Trevor.

Thanks for sharing this detailed report Jane. It's the first time I've read about a casualty of New Zealand. The photos are great.
